Mission:
Season 1, Episode 1: "Ooze"
Location: U.S.S. Yorktown - Transporter Room 1, Deck 3
Timeline: June 23, 2403, 1245 Hours (Stardate 78020.65)
The flight to the Yorktown had been a long one. The shuttle, bearing the registration of Starfleet Academy approached the Yorktown early in its morning bearing the esteemed professor, Jeksenri Vale.
In his time in Starfleet, the noted historian had made a name for himself among the popular historians of academia and publication, especially concerning his work on the Early Days of Starfleet and the Federation. It would be fitting that Jeksenri would find himself on a ship bound for the Axanari Regions. The planet and region was famous for the Battle of Axanar in the Four Years War of the late 2240s and Early 2250s as one of the many battles between the Federation and the Klingon Empire in the so called “Cold War” period.
The shuttle officer nodded to him, signaling that they were in position to be beamed aboard. Jeksenri picked up his leather bag, putting it over his shoulder, then picking up his duffel bag ready for transport.
Chief Katajainen was the one manning the transporter at the time they were expecting Dr. Vale. Once the Doctor's shuttle had signaled that they were ready to transport, Nikka coordinated with her counterpart on the shuttle to ensure the transfer of Dr. Vale's transporter pattern was a successful one. Something that Nikka only knew once Dr. Vale had fully materialized on the transporter pad.
"Welcome aboard the Yorktown, Doc." Nikka greeted with a hand salute. "Commander Karibuchi sends her regrets that she wasn't here to meet you in person. However, she has been quite busy preparing for a staff briefing."
Jeksenri returned the hand salute, with a soft smile.
"Then it seems I've arrived just in time to hit the ground running."
He smiles, picking up his bag once more, he steps down from the transporter pad.
"Briefing room is on the bridge deck, I presume?"
"That would be correct:" Nikka nodded, eyeing Jeksenri's bag. "You don't want to drop your bags off at your quarters first?"
“This old thing” He pats the leather bag that was hanging across his body. “It’s mostly full of PADDs, papers and other things I use on a daily basis. My effects should be coming aboard after me," he elaborated.
"Understood, I'll see to it that they're delivered to your quarters." Nikka made notes on her PADD. "Do you know the way to the turbolifts?"
Jeksenri starts then stops to think. He hadn't been on the new Constitutions before.
"I..I might need a guide, if you don't mind," he spoke again.
"Of course." Nikka smiled. "Right this way..."
Nikka led the doctor out of the transporter room and down the corridor. On the Constitution III, the corridors were notably wider than on other ships, and lined with windows when applicable, helping to make the ship appear less claustrophobic.
When they reached the turbolift bay, Nikka stopped and motioned to the lifts.
"And here we are:" She said. "Now, these turbolifts only go down as far as deck 14. If you want to go any lower in the ship than that, you'll need to transfer to the stardrive turbolifts."
"Thank you, Chief. I look forward to working with you during my time here." He smiles at the chief, before pressing a button and stepping into the turbolift.
The bridge was bustling with activity as Jeksenri stepped off of the turbolift, with junior officers scurrying too and fro as they tended to the bridge stations in (evident) absence of their senior contemporaries. A large set of doors located at the back of the bridge- leading into what Jeksenri had been informed was some sort of conference room- were suspiciously closed.
"Can I help you, Lieutenant?" A kind young Ensign called out as he spotted Jeksenri from across the room.
"Commander" Jeksenri corrected, politely. "I'm looking for the Skipper." He elaborated.
"My apologies, Commander," the Ensign expressed before motioning towards the conference room. "She's right through those doors over there; I'm informed that she's setting up for a senior staff meeting in...." -he glanced over at the ship's chronometer- "...Ten minutes?"
Jeksenri gave the ensign a kind, sagely nod of the head. “Thank you Ensign, as you were.”
Jeksenri turns and walks up to the briefing room doors before tapping the chime button at the side wall and waits for permission to enter.
The doors to the conference room slid open, and Jeksenri was surprised to find himself greeted by a familiar face that he hadn't seen for the better part of a decade, possibly even longer. In his nearly 30 years of teaching, there were quite a few pupils of his whose eagerness to learn had stuck out in his memory, but one particular standout amongst those was a young, bright-eyed teenager that he had agreed to tutor during his five years aboard the Republic; to find her now standing before him- adorned in a neatly-pressed command uniform and proudly sporting a full three pips on her collar- it was almost hard to believe that she was that same girl who'd been asking all the questions, all those years ago.
"Jek-Sensei!" the woman exclaimed as she excitedly pulled Jeksenri into a bear-hug. "Son of a bitch, it's really you! I can't believe it, after all these years..."
Jeksenri lets out a "oomph" as the air rushed out of his lungs in a surprised bear hug from the smaller woman.
"Hikari-Chan." He greets warmly as he regains his bearings, reciprocating the hug.
"I am so glad to see you again." He smiles down at her. "I hope, that you've been keeping up with your studies?" He asks curiously, with a fatherly or big brother type of tone.
"Well, as I'm sure you can tell, I've certainly been putting them to good use," Hikari grinned as she indicated towards the pips on her collar. "And Takami has as well, in case you were wondering."
Jeksenri smiles.
"I saw Takami-San a few weeks ago when the Hornet was docked at Sol Station and like her, I'm very proud. Command of a Heavy Cruiser is a great honor."
"And howdy," Hikari replied. "She loves that crew to pieces; I had the pleasure of meeting her XO at the Utopia Aerospace Exhibition last year, and he says that they couldn't have asked for a Captain who's been as fully dedicated to her job as Takami has been."
Jeksenri beams.
"I was very happy, too, to get your orders to transfer to Yorktown. So, tell me, how can I help you?"
"Well, we've had something come up in this past hour, and we were in the process of preparing for a senior staff meeting," Hikari explained as she motioned for Jeksenri to follow her inside. "Why don't you come in and we'll bring you up to speed on the situation once everyone's arrived?"
"Aye, Captain" Jeksenri says quite happily with a big smile as he follows Hikari into the briefing room.
As Jeksenri followed Hikari into the briefing room, he was keen to observe two other women already seated at the table; the first was another Asian woman, not unlike Hikari, but significantly taller and with long, jet-black hair and amber-gold eyes. Seated across the way from her was a Caucasian, with dark red (almost ginger?) hair, hazel eyes, and a teal blue Sciences uniform.
"Right then, I suppose introductions are in order," Hikari explained as she moved over to the far side of the table. "Sensei, this is Commander Fan Shuren and Lieutenant Commander Ashlynn Regan, my Executive and Second Officers, respectively. Fan, Regan, this is Lieutenant Commander Jeksenri Vale, my old History Tutor from back when I was growing up."
Jeksenri nods his head in greeting to both women.
"It's a pleasure to meet you both." He spoke warmly. "I understand from what little I got from my orders here, we're heading into Axanar. A fascinating region with a robust history with the Federation."
“Annexar,” Shuren corrected with a polite smile. “Pleasure to meet you, Mr. Vale. I’m glad to know that many of our crew have past connections with each other. We’re en route to the space of the isolationist former Annexari Socialist Republic. There is not much in the library but it should help. And our Annexari General-turned-Revolutionary should help fill in any gaps you may have.”
Jeksenri nods attentively.
"I doubt that they'll be entirely too pleased to see a Federation Starship enter their space. I'll brush up on the local history and offer whatever knowledge I can. I may be a bit...rusty on ship duties but I'm sure I can shake the dust of the academy off me and adapt quickly."
"The provisional government has invited us," Shuren noted, "but you're right that many of the people might to be too welcoming. Hard to tell how ordinary people will react to an outsider bringing food and medication. Which of those factors weighs more, the outsider or the aid?"
"Both" Ashlynn interjected after being quiet for so long. "In my eyes, while the aid is vital, our presence here is just as important and depending on how we act or how we're seen, there could be different outcomes for how the Federation-Annexari relations could go."
Ash scolded herself mentally for interjecting even if it wasn't going to be an issue. "Erm, my apologies. Lieutenant Commander Ashlynn Regan, Chief Science Officer" she introduced herself to Jeksenri.
"I hear good things, Commander. It's a pleasure to meet you." Jeksenri smiles and nods his head in cordial greeting to his new superior officer.
Ashlynn simply nodded with a light smile. "The pleasure is mine Doctor."
"Well, now that we've got that out of the way," Hikari sighed. "Why don't you have a seat, Sensei? We'll be getting started in just a few minutes."
Jeksenri smiles, walking over to take a seat next to Ashlynn.
"Thank you, Skipper."
For once, Naoe had been at the helm, and was more readily on hand for the staff briefing. Granted, she'd just dealt with Nikka bothering her over her combadge. Apparently, Nikka was excited that somebody named Jeksenri Vale was on board, but Naoe, ever so indifferent, had shut her down, saying that they would talk about it later.
And so, Naoe was among the first non-command staff to enter the briefing room. She nodded respectfully to the commanders and newcomer before assuming an empty seat.
Stormcloud stepped from his Tactical console and entered the Briefing room; a PADD in hand with the latest recruitment levels; the planned dispersement of Security once at the operational area and the weapons stocks, torpedo supply and status of the Phaser array. The dominant Bajoran Earring in the right ear lobe was the first thing that seemed to set him apart from most Vulcans; the habit of using the Family name; Stormcloud, rather than his Vulcan 'First Name' while in conversation might be a second. Looking around he moved to a random chair to the right hand of the head of the table.
"Please pardon my Tardiness; I was making up to date numbers for the meeting and the data exchange was slower than one might prefer." He greet. "I hope all is well within your respective departments?
Trying to follow human traditions of being polite seemed the logical course of action at the moment.
"No worries, Lieutenant, you're actually here early," Hikari smiled. "We've got about..." she looked over at the chronometer at the wall. "...six minutes before we start?"
Paisley strolled in behind the others, unbothered that she was being pulled away from the Conn. She'd left Ensign Sar in charge of it; he was capable, and besides, she believed that tossing the junior officers straight into the fire was the best way to learn. "Good...afternoon," she said, glancing quickly at her chronometer. Indeed, it was afternoon, but she'd failed to take her lunch break-sometimes the Carjoran simply forgot. Oh, well, she'd get a snack on her way back to the Bridge or something. She took a seat, and looked around for Minerva. In Paisley's head, the two women were already best friends, and, like a schoolgirl, she looked forward to sitting next to the woman and chitchatting before the staff meeting got started.
Stepping through the door Sakaan took a quick, assured look around the Briefing Room. Registering that most of the senior officers were present, she noted that there was an unfamiliar Commander sat with the Command Team. Taking it in her stride, she moved around the table to a free seat and sat down, placing her PADD in front of her. Noting the time on the chronometer she noted drily, 'if we're all this punctual, it bodes well for our assignment.'
On the opposite side of the room the doors opened a d in walked the Asobi Chief Engineer, Lieutenant Fran. She quietly hopes into a seat.
Minerva and Halcyon walked in at the same time, the diplomat flexing his wrist as the doctor watched it, "Squash is a dangerous sport to play, Hal, you really need to have more flexibility in your arm and wrist joints before you drive right into it. Stick to swordplay and if you really need more exercise, at your age I'd recommend something a bit easier on your joints. Golf or baseball or even soccer, tennis if you HAVE to only run back and forth a few meters." She reached out and grabbed the hand again, feeling the joint again, "Otherwise, rest this a day or two before going back fore more punishment.
"Yes, doctor.." Halcyon replied in dejection before sighing, "Is it good or bad to have a doc as a sister-in-law? They think they can just feel you up whenever!" This was a joke intended for the others in the room.
Last to arrive was General Shastakar, her arms laden with physical documents due to her relative lack of experience in using a PADD.
"All information concerning the Dacaris IV situation has been gathered, as per your request, Commander," she announced as she set the documents down on the table and took her seat.
"Excellent," Hikari nodded before turning to address the rest of the room. "Now before we begin..."
She reached forward and pressed a button on the table, activating a view screen directly behind her; it showed the briefing room of what appeared to be a Bellerophon-Class Science Explorer, with another crew seated around the table in similar fashion. Situated in center frame was a young, blonde woman with shoulder length hair; the four pips on her collar denoted she was a Captain, and most certainly this vessel's commanding officer.
"Captain Cooke," Hikari greeted with a smile. "Glad you and your staff could make it here today."
"Missouri's always happy to lend a hand." Captain Cooke responded with a nod and a smile.
"Right, then," Hikari began as she turned her attention back towards her senior staff. "Now that the gang's all here, we can finally get started."
She tapped a few more buttons on the table and the view screen switched to a split-view, displaying a star map of the Provisional State on the lefthand side of the screen.
"As I am sure most of you here are already aware, Starfleet has agreed to render aid to the Provisional State of Greater Annexar, which has just come off a long and devastating civil war. Our mission statement has been, and still is, to establish good working relations with the Annexari people before gradually expanding our operations in the region. And within the last couple of hours, an opportunity has finally presented itself with which to make a strong first impression."
the screen zoomed in on a star system situated in the upper-left corner of the region.
"This particular system has long been categorized in Vulcan Star Charts as Sigma Thoranix, though the Annexari refer to it domestically as Dacaris, which is what we shall be referring it as from here on out. According to our reports, the system is home to a Class M0 V Star, with an ecliptic spanning approximately 0.4 Astronomical Units and comprising 10 planets, the fourth and fifth of which reside within the star's habitable zone. In particular, we'll be taking a look at the fourth planet, which encompasses the bulk of the Annexari's agricultural output from within the greater Dacaris System."
She turned to Shuren and nodded. "Commander Fan, if you'll take it from here?"
The First Officer and walked to the viewscreen which took up the back wall of the conference room. She typed some keys and an image of a beautiful planet with large green and gold continents over blue ocean. Lakes dotted the continents, interconnected with networks of wide rivers. “This is the planet Dacaris IV, as it was when it was first surveyed over a century ago. Note the extensive gold coloring across so much of the main continents. This is a grain called grâv, which was a major staple crop in the old Socialist Republic. And this is from data collected last week by a Provisional Government vessel, shared with us by General Shastakar.” The screen changed, and the map had undergone serious changes. Large portions of the gold were replaced with a dull red-brown. Many of the lakes had shrunk and rivers diverted or dissipated. “There have been many large-scale climactic changes over the past hundred years, many meant to increase grain production at the expense of biodiversity, but something else has tipped the scales, and now the grâv is in sharp decline. There is famine among the local population, as the former rulers saw fit to take the decreasing quantities of food for the military at the expense of local residents.”
"Should Security expect some upheaval as we will be both armed and moving about in a protective manner be seen like a military Force by the citizens who will logically have less than favorable views towards 'Military Personnel' with the present decreased food supply for civilians conditions? Stormcloud asked. "Humanoid nature is to have negative emotional reactions to those that are not starving at the expense of the populous. So should my forces be extra vigilant of the population having a negative view of us?"
"I wouldn't put it past them," Hikari speculated. "Contact with the Dacaris IV Colony was only recently established, and given how the dire the situation there is, the locals may feel as if the military abandoned them, and may be just a little distrustful of organizations- Annexari or otherwise- who organize themselves in such a manner; it will fall on each and every one of us here to show them that we have the best of intentions, and we're going to do everything in our given power that we're here to help them."
"Do we know if any parasites such as blight exist on Dacaris IV?" A gold shirted brunette in the other conference room asked over the screen. "Or if any of the pesticides used by the old Socialist Republic contributed to the decline of the crops? The different types of pesticides used make more of a difference than you think: We once lost an entire harvest because we switched pesticides."
"When the Socialist Republic was still in contact with Dacaris IV, the authorities had reported a noxious black ooze bubbling up from the soil," General Shastakar chimed in. "It was described to be relatively harmless- if somewhat irritating- to the locals, but lethal to their grâv stock; at least 90% of all grâv crops that came into contact with the ooze were reported to have died within a three-month period."
"So, if I were I to wager a guess... probably a blight," Hikari agreed.
Surprised that the Missouri was on-station for the mission, Sakaan filed away a notion to look in to the ship, her crew and capabilities for later reference. For now she leaned forward and faced her own Command Crew. 'Not to add to the never-ending stream of question. Or to fall in to the stereotype of an Intelligence Officer, but are we sure that the Anexarians have done this themselves? Their neighbours are hardly friendly, and this kind of interference would be right up their street, as humans are fond of saying.'
"Do they use climate control systems?" Paisley piped up. She was trying to determine where her particular skills might fit in-so far, it seemed like science's wheelhouse. She just did stuff to computers.
General Shastakar shook her head. "Mega-projects of that scale were most typically reserved for colonies within the direct vicinity of our home world; given that the Dacaris system was considered a fringe territory, the Moldoviț Regime would not have considered it to be worth the expense."
Though not of a scientific mindset, Stormcloud did think of the Blight and the Climate as a means of Biological Warfare; though this seemed far-fetched but the stimuli could occupy the idle part of his mind on a logic puzzle with this new aspect as a square to be shuffled.
"About that ooze:" The gold shirt in the other conference room spoke up again. "Do we know if it's naturally occurring? Or is there evidence to suggest an artificial contamination of the soil?"
'Yes, that was my earlier question,' Sakaan noted drily to the officer on the screen. 'Is that why the Missouri is on-station? Because we suspect foul-play and Starfleet is unsure that we can deal with the issue on our own?'
"When contact was re-established with Dacaris IV, the authorities were questioned as to the nature of the ooze," General Shastakar reported. "Though we only have word of mouth to go off of, they have every reason to believe that it was artificially introduced into their ecosystem - though whether by accident or malicious intentions, they can't say."
"To answer the Vulcan's question about how we fit into this:" Captain Cooke responded. "Commander Karibuchi has requested the services of Master Chief Jinryo here:" She indicated the gold shirt who had been asking the questions. "Given her experience with farming on Schumacher III. Does this answer your question, Commander?"
Nodding in Cooke's direction, Sakaan replied with a quick 'thank you for the explanation. It is a rare skill indeed these days, and the more minds attending the problem the smoother it will be.' The Vulcan still did not discount foul play, but felt much the better for being in the loop as to the Missouri's presence.
"Captain, I might recommend a diversified approach," Shuren ventured. "Operations leads the distribution of aid, to stem the immediate threat of starvation among the population. Science, with the help of the remote advisor from the Missouri, look into this black ooze and how it might be treated or eliminated. Engineering and Intelligence look into potential causes of this ooze. Security keeps our various away teams safe while Diplomacy works with the local Dacaris authorities to reduce any tensions."
"I would concur with that assessment," Hikari nodded, before shifting her attention back towards the viewscreen. "Captain Cooke, do you agree?"
"I would suggest that Science would be better equipped to handle the job of looking into potential causes of the ooze; and Engineering would be better suited to assist Operations in distributing the aid." Patricia suggested. "Lieutenants, would you agree?"
Patricia motioned to two different officers: One was an insectoid with masculine features in an Engineering gold uniform, while the other was an Orion redhead in a Science teal uniform. Both officers silently nodded in agreement with Patricia's proposed modifications to the plan.
"I'd like to help out as well." Minerva noted that she had been left out of the whole range of the response, "Hearts and Minds mission to show goodwill could help with the tensions and maybe even get some information from the locals we might not get otherwise?"
'It is a logical proposal,' Sakaan opined from her seat, nodding in Zephyrin's direction. 'The local population would be much more willing to non-Intelligence members of the crew, particularly if they're rendering aide at the same time. Malnutrition can give rise to many maladies that the Federation is well-placed to treat.'
"Most of which also have rather simple treatments." Minerva agreed with Sakaan, "Thanks to General Shastakar's willingness for an examination, I have discovered that we could easily create significant stocks of antibiotics, analgesics and other helpful medications for the Anexxari as well as a useful baseline to help with diagnoses. I've already put together several field units worth of sets in anticipation of use and have worked with my medical staff to ensure that we are all capable of at least the minimum of competent care."
The Carjoran Ops chief, who was normally very loud and outgoing, had remained silent. She didn't have much to contribute yet anyway, but now, she did. "I can assist Minerva," she said, "and that will also allow me access to the inner workings of these people, to see what is going on," she said.
Minerva gave Paisley a thumbs up and a bright smile. She could handle logistics moderately well, but with the Ops officer there with her, she knew she could focus on the patient care and she really did like having as many hands on deck with her whenever possible.
"Well, then," Hikari smiled. "I think you all have a fair understanding of your roles with this assignment; Ops will be working with Medical and Engineering, Sciences will be working with Intelligence, Diplomacy will be coordinating with the authorities, and Security will be responsible for keeping everyone safe. Any additional questions?"
"Not so much a question, but one small thing I wish to bring to everyone's attention," General Shastakar spoke up. "Despite the far-reaching devastation of our civil war, our borders are still heavily guarded by a series of gate-ships we refer to as Krolyats; since our communication network has been disrupted by the conflict and not everyone in our domain knows that we have reached out to the Federation for assistance, the Yorktown, Missouri and any future Federation Starships will need to register themselves with a Krolyat in order to safely enter Annexari space."
"We'll be sure to keep that in mind, General." Patricia nodded.
"General, we would be grateful if you provided our flight control officer with the last known location of the nearest Krolyat on our course to Dacaris IV," Shuren suggested.
"Say, I've got a question:" Naoe finally spoke up. "How does Helm fit into all of this?"
"Well, I wouldn't necessarily be banking on an ambush, but given General Shastakar's accounts, the conditions are questionable for us to fully rule out that possibility," Hikari replied. "Given your experience with the holodeck, it might behoove us to run a couple of simulations, practice on some evasive maneuvers in the unlikelihood we're attacked."
"Okay, so another boring assignment of keep the ship in orbit." Naoe grumbled quietly. "Alright, then; I'll be sure to put it in a bulletin for the lower deckers..."
"I can anticipate the possibility for transporter disruption," Shuren observed, looking at the grumbling helmswoman. "Moving personnel around by shuttle, including rapid evacuation, may be necessary. Prepare for that contingency as well."
Naoe looked up at Shuren.
"Alright, I'll be sure to put that in the bulletin as well..." She said with a similar degree of unenthusiasm.
Sensing that Naoe wasn't terribly enthused about the idea of being benched for this assignment, Hikari saw an opportunity to make this something of a learning experience for her CFCO, who still needed a bit of work in regards to curbing her temper.
"You know... given the scope of this assignment, I think we could use a few extra hands on the ground," she proposed. "Provided you follow Commander Fan's instructions and don't pick fights with the locals... I think we could make some room for you on the away team?"
"WHAT??" Naoe shrieked.
Hikari frowned. "It seemed to me that that you were itching for a more active role in this assignment, Lieutenant; am I mistaken?"
"Yes, you very much are." Naoe responded, the words tumbling over each other. "The mundane's what keeps me out of trouble. I live for the mundane!"
Hikari sat back and sighed. "You know, Lieutenant, a wise man once told me that if we weren't willing to try new things and take on new responsibilities, we wouldn't have gotten to where we are today; some times, in order to grow, we need to step outside of our comfort zone every now and then."
She glanced over at Jeksenri and smiled.
Jeksenri smiles at his protégé, chuckling softly.
“I see we remembered our philosophy lessons”
Hikari then shifted her attention back over towards Naoe. "While I'm certainly not asking you to carry this mission by yourself Lieutenant- I wouldn't expect that of anyone here- I think you might stand to learn more by being on the away team than if you were to settle into the same old boring routine you probably know by heart?"
Naoe sighed. Clearly Hikari wasn't going to budge on her position:
"Fine, I'll go on your stupid away team." She said. "But if I get involved in anything that would have a negative impact on Starfleet, I do so as an individual, not as a Starfleet officer."
Naoe hoped that Hikari would agree to those terms.
"I think we can agree to those terms," Hikari nodded with surprisingly less resistance than Naoe had been expecting.
Naoe was relieved. It wasn't what she had signed up for, but now if anything went down, she was off the hook.
"No further questions from Ops yet," Paisley piped up. "But Shuren, I can assign someone to assist you if necessary," she said. Ops kind
"Right, then," Hikari nodded. "You all have your assignments, so if there are no further questions... I'd like to consider this meeting adjourned."
Sakaan rosed to her feet gracefully and nodded at the Captain. 'I look forward to our assignment.' She raised her PADD, 'if anyone needs me, I'll be preparing for my part.' With that she made her way to the door and out into the ship.
