926 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Season 1, Episode 0: "A Time To Heal"
Location: Moonlight Oasis Bar & Grill

The sounds of a piano wafted out from the partially open doors that sat under an ornate sign that declared the place the 'Moonlight Oasis Bar & Grill', with a logo of a an island with the backdrop of a double moon.

"So many times I was alone, I couldn't sleep, you left me drowning in the tears of memory,
And ever since you've gone I found it hard to breathe, 'Cause there was so much your heart couldn't see,
A thousand ways that dreams rolling off my eyes, But time's been healing me and I say goodbye,

'Cause I can breathe again, dream again, I'll be on the road again, like it used to be the other day,
Now I feel free again, so innocent, 'Cause someone makes me whole again, for sure.. I'll find another you..

Could you imagine someone else is by my side, I've been afraid he couldn't keep myself from falling,
My heart was always searching for a place to hide, could not await the dawn to bring another day,
You're not the only one, so hear me when I say, The thoughts of you, they just fade away,

Cause I can breathe again, dream again, I'll be on the road again, like it used to be the other day,
Now I feel free again, so innocent, cause someone makes me whole again, for sure.. I'll find another you..

Sometimes I see you when I close my eyes, You're still a part of my life

But I can breathe again, dream again, I'll be on the road again, like it used to be the other day,
Now I feel free again, so innocent, cause someone makes me whole again, for sure.. I'll find another you, mmmmm,

Oh I'll find another... Youuuuu...." The piano trailed off and up as it descended. At the piano, a dark gray haired woman in a deep maroon shirt and skirt nodded to herself as she made mental notes on her singing, which had been about as good as it ever had been. The glasses on her face shimmered slightly, them being holographic in nature to correct her vision, which wasn't all THAT bad, it just needed a little bit to keep in focus.

Sitting away in a quiet corner of the Lounge, Sakaan listened appreciatively. Her music tastes were usually more Bolian Double-Funk, Detroit Funk and Post-Contact West Coast Space Folk rather than Cascada's Hard Dance, but the singer was more than competent. A shame the venue is so empty tonight. The Yorktown was still in the early stages of the crew coming aboard, and most had yet to settle in. Much of the crew she had seen so far aboard were support staff from Utopia Planitia and spent their down-time off-ship.

As the red crescent of Mars rotated just in view out of the Lounge's windows, Sakaan gave a polite clap as the song came to an end, and went for a sip of her Risian Sunrise cocktail.

Beatrix smiled in appreciation and trailed a finger across the top of the piano as she got up from the piano and started to make her way towards the sole diner in the lounge. Vulcan by look of her, but the soft smile on Trixie's face tended to pull people in. "Good evening, I'm Beatrix Zephyrin, proprietor of the Moonlight Oasis and the primary entertainment, I just wanted to come over to say thank you for coming in and to see if there's anything I can do to make your evening better?"

Sakaan shook her head. 'The music was excellent. Your grasp of rhythm and timing is quite competent. It was a pleasant experience to listen to you perform.' She resisted a grimace as she realised she was gushing at the younger woman. Risian Sunrises are never a good idea, she admonished herself. The Vulcan changed tack. 'May I ask why you were singing to a mostly empty room? Are you trying to ascertain the harmonics?'

"A good singer always practices whenever it's practical. It's been about three years since I was last on tour doing major performances, but I've done a lot of smaller ones since then for schools and the like. Not saying I won't ever go back on tour, but I've gotten a lot of enjoyment out of the smaller things." Trixie smiled beatifically, "Commander Fan was the one that made the recommendation that I come aboard Yorktown to run this establishment, which still has a lot of work to be done as you can see. I only have the one waiter and a cook right now along with myself, but that's plenty for now. In fact, you're probably going to see one of my sisters soon, Minerva, she's the Chief Medical Officer on board."

'Logically the next senior officer I'll encounter given her duties,' Sakaan responded after digesting Trixie's reply. She found she had several burning questions for the presumably younger woman, but resisted asking the ones that would be considered rude by emotional races. Sakaan would at least like to be known as a tactful Vulcan. If there is such a thing. She rephrased her question to be more polite, 'If you were such a success as a major performing artist, may I ask why you find this to be as rewarding?' Sakaan arched an eyebrow, 'I'm given to believe that the emotional satisfaction received when performing to large crowds is difficult to recapture in different settings.'
