Mission:
Season 1, Episode 0: "A Time To Heal"
Location: Security Training Holosuite
ON
Shuren had spent most of her career doing security. Most of the best security officers she’d worked with over the years had earned their senior positions already, or had retired from Starfleet already. It meant that, unlike for medical, she didn’t have a friend or long time ally to go to and recommend. And it meant that their new security chief would be someone she had never served with.
She had read Sovon’s file after the Captain had selected him. He seemed competent, worthy of the job. It was likely that she’d be serving side by side with him in a combat setting at some point. Based on everything she’d seen, she was comfortable trusting him, but that level of implicit trust, when you knew with absolute certainty that the person next to you in the foxhole had your back, could only come with time.
And why not start now?
She made a reservation with the security training holosuite and waited for her security chief to join her.
Stormcloud was on time ; such a short trip to the training area.
"Commander Fan." He greet. "It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I had an appointment with Captain, medical and headshrinker so I am sorry for the delay in meeting with you."
"Lieutenant Stormcloud," Shuren said, extending her hand toward him for a handshake. "No apology needed. I would have preferred to greet you and our new Counselor when you came aboard but duties kept me."
"My wife and I have had our own delays to normal with the way we 'were' brought aboard with remaining leave ime before duty." He nod. "Think nothing of it, the Prophets have their timing that is always for the best."
"I've programmed a series of historical re-enactments," the Commander said, gesturing to the holosuite door. "The specific details and objectives will be given to us inside, and the setting and objectives will change once we've accomplished our first goals." She tapped a few keys on the nearest console, which made a satisfactory chime. "After you, Lieutenant," she said as the door opened.
Stormcloud had exchanged his on duty weapons in a small lock-up near the archway. He had the type Two phaser standard with the Dominion Era time line with the knife and Revolver in the small of his back. Dealing with Pirates and dampening fields that small of his back is just mainly for a feeling of being covered more so than practical use.
He programmed something a little different; the era was in the Mid Dominion War but with a twist. A smaller colony that was in the strategic relevance to the Dominion, this Colony was attacked by Dominion Forces; the battle a defensive one. With Federation spread thinner the protection of the people while under attack rested more on Security from the Colony than with support from Flotillas or task forces.
Stormcloud was young in this era and on Bajor prior to the reoccupation by Cardassians. In this era the Federation was still trying to hold against the stronger Dominion attacks when the Cardassians were pushing their first thrusts under alliance to the Founders and Jem'Hadar.
This Colony would be among those lost, however the Federation relief force did clash with Dominion and manage to get many of the survivors off the planet; those left after the barbaric warfare of the enemy. A low percentage; but this also showed the more 'Gritty' side of the conflict.
"I hope this will achieve your curiosity. More of one's skill and potential is with a losing battle rather than one with a known victory." Stormcloud admitted.
"Well said," Shuren agreed.
The scene in pause consisted of the outer region of the colony; Center buildings with a tunnel system and waste disposal leading out of the city. The Upper surface areas are the tattered buildings where the Federation Forces are holding back enemy forces to cover the evacuation of citizens.
"Guerilla Warfare to delay the enemy while Non-Coms are gotten away is the objective." Stormcloud explained. "Try not to get simulated death please."
The XO smirked. "I've not had the chance to engage in guerilla war before," she admitted. Normally such attacks spoke of a slower paced conflict, where striking a target in secret brought an advantage over the longer term. But she saw the value here. Behind the line, they could inflict enough damage, meted out along specific lines, to slow the enemy advance even in a tactical setting. "Anti-air torpedo launcher, fifty meters east. How good are you with these?" She held up an explosive device.
Stormcloud look his Commanding Officer in the eye, the Vulcan expression clear.
"I rated above average with them in my Qualifying Trials as well as the Grenade Launcher." He reply casually. "The disadvantage to them is when targeted by enemy after two maybe three salvoes they will be destroyed be the enemy. One must know when one is no longer effective with the weapon and get clear before... exterminated."
She shook her head. "You misunderstand. You're right, if we seize it we get off only a few shots." She held up and tossed him a Starfleet issue kit containing a stabilized compound that, only when it received the appropriate inputs from a detonator, would explode spectacularly. "I was never a fan of static defenses. Those few shots wouldn't do enough. Safer for everyone if we take it off the map ourselves."
"It shows the real dark side of combat." Stormcloud snagged the kit . "Down and dirty you might say, the route out of the city is a hundred meters south east of us where the civilians are being headed; what else do you logically call the rapid push to get people out, our task is to slow the advance of enemy forces and buy time." He nodded to the XO.
"And also make sure that the evac transports can launch," Shuren agreed. "Set the charge, I'll cover you." She took a defensive stance and fired reflexively at a pair of Jem’Hadar that rounded a corner.
Not a difficult limpet to set, Stormcloud put it where it could do the most 'Damage' and therefore the best delay of the Enemy progression. The digital gave him prompts to set yield, which maximum is the preferred setting and the motion control needing multiple signals to let loose.
"Two point three seconds will suffice." Stormcloud said and then stood. "It is logical to get out of the detonation area Commander." He suggested with phaser in hand. "Thirty meters south down this pathway will get us clear."
"Then hoof it, Lieutenant," Shuren said, firing as the two quickly cleared the detonation zone.
The AA gun erupted into a flower of fire and debris, prompting a smile from the XO. "Good work, Mr. Stormcloud. Let's go find another."
