Personal History		Ethan was born in Austin, TX, on October 31, 2375. He was adopted a few days later by Davis and Louise Matthews. Both were Starfleet officers, his father was an engineer, stationed as an instructor at the Academy, and his mother was in a similar role, though she was a doctor. He never met his birth parents, but their medical histories were on file, with their identifying information redacted at their request. Ethan was always made aware of the fact that he was adopted, and that he was chosen by his parents because they could not have children of their own. He was never made to feel that he was a second choice, instead, he was made to feel like a blessing that came into their lives at just the right time. Growing up in San Francisco, and surrounded by Starfleet at every turn, it was no surprise when he showed an interest in joining once he was old enough to start thinking about it. Still, his parents urged him to explore all his opportunities, as they knew that Starfleet was only one of many he would be able to accomplish if he put his mind to it. He had shown a great aptitude for science, and loved the ocean and all the animals he found there, and many expected him to go to school to become a marine biologist. Even he toyed with the idea for a few months later in his teen years. It was in his senior year of high school that Ethan found his passion. Taking psychology as an elective, he found the subject endlessly fascinating and showed a real aptitude for it. With that in mind he turned his attention away from Starfleet, and towards a more traditional route, college. Over the span of six years Ethan would attend Howard University, in Washington D.C., earning a doctorate in Psychology. He would then apply to Starfleet Medical Academy, at the age of 24, with plans to become a counselor. Because of his advanced degree his time at the Academy was fast tracked, with him graduating two years later with the rank of Lieutenant J.G. He was assigned to the USS Sierra Leon, as a counselor, and placed under the wing of Commander Marcelo Rodriguez, one of Starfleet’s best and brightest counselors. Over the course of the next two years Ethan would be tested, and his skills honed by his mentor, until Commander Rodriquez felt that he was ready to take on further responsibilities. He was given a provisional placement, with an increase in rank to full lieutenant, to serve as the chief counselor aboard the USS Yorktown.
